The Story
This week we’re checking out the Singulus by Ash Instruments. Russian luthier Andrey Shevchenko made the bass with a 30-year old pine body capped with a beautiful slab of poplar burl in a “Flying Blue” frosted transparent finish.
The five-string bass’s three-piece padauk neck is also topped with padauk for its fingerboard, which holds 24 frets. For electronics, Shevchenko opted to fit the Singulus with Nordstrand dual coil pickups and an Aguilar OBP-3TK/PP preamp. Besides a three-band EQ, the bass has three switches. The first toggles between active and passive operation, while the second selects the humbucker versus single coil modes. The third switch acts as a mute.
