Bass of the Week: Odieng Orfeo H5 Headless Bass

Originally featured December 4, 2023

This week we’re checking out the Orfeo H5 from Indonesia’s Odieng. The headless bass has a jaw-dropping top made from Grupel Burl, which comes from a tree native to Indonesia. Its dark, complex pattern is contrasted by a Birdseye maple fingerboard that’s fitted to a seven-piece neck of mahogany, purpleheart, rosewood, and maple. Aside from the multiscale neck and slanted frets, the fingerboard is notable for its special inlay that glows in the dark.

Odieng fitted this Orfeo with a pair of Nordstrand Zen Blade pickups matched to an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. The bass’s controls include Volume, Blend, Bass, Middle (with a push/pull mid frequency), and Treble. The two switches are to toggle active and passive operation as well as toggle the mid frequency.
