Canna Guitars shared one of their latest creations on social media, and it stopped me in my tracks. The Canna EVO Acoustic Archtop bass guitar is a striking design with elegant features like an open headstock, gold hardware, and a multi-scale neck. Its spruce top resembles that of many other acoustic basses, but Canna made the rest of the body out of solid ebony, which is a unique feature I’ve never seen before.
“Pretty hard to do the concave bend, but I like that with the all-black design,” luthier Jakob Frank explains. “It almost doesn’t look like wood anymore.”
He explains the rest of the design on his website.
“This bass guitar is based on my EVO model and resembles the evolution of my regular Hempstone roundback guitars using solid wood. The shape of the body provides a much tighter fit to the body while maintaining a big body volume,” he writes. “The side sound port is directed at the player and provides a huge bass response. The thumb rest allows for great playability and orientation while looking perfectly fitting with the fan fret-design.”
