Jake Serek of Serek Basses has a style that is rooted in the tradition of bass guitar history while advancing in his own ideas. That makes sense when you realize that he worked for one of the larger bass companies around, plus his natural curiosity led him to reverse engineering classic designs. This week we\u2019re checking out his Sacramento model.<\/p>\n

\"Serek<\/p>\n

\u201cI began building basses a few years back under the watchful eyes of the shop supervisor at Lakland Basses,\u201d Serek states. \u201cI started by copying some of my favorite designs so I could further understand what made them my favorites. The Sacramento is one of my first departures from building \u201chomages\u201d although I think some of my stronger influences are still present.\u201d<\/p>\n

While bass comes in three body woods, this particular bass we\u2019re checking out sports all mahogany with maple binding and a bubinga fingerboard. Its unique body design benefits tone and comfortability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Sacramento features a chambered body and a two-piece neck set into the body with a tenon that reaches all the way to the bridge. This makes it very lightweight without sacrificing resonance,\u201d the luthier explains. \u201cHipshot hardware is the standard, and I have been very pleased with the TV Jones Thunder\u2019Tron pickups thus far. I will be experimenting with different electronics and woods on future builds. This bass is unique as well because it has double-binding whereas the standard Sacramento has binding only on the back of the body, similar to a Rickenbacker 4005. This one has a 34\u201d scale, but I also offer 30.5\u201d short scale. Typically this bass has a solid color Nitro finish, but the Mahogany was calling for a satin finish this time around.\u201d<\/p>\n
