This week we check out something a little different: The RevolveR Steampunk bass made by Kyle Miller, aka \u201cThin Gypsy Thief\u201d. <\/p>\n

Miller, who works as a visual artist, luthier and propmaker in Vancouver, was commissioned to build the fully functional instrument for rapper T-Pain. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe bass was built for Grammy winning recording artist T-Pain as a co-branded piece to match the release of his last album, RevolveR<\/em>,\u201d Miller explains. \u201cIf you look at the detail in the inset gauges, they each say \u2018T-Pain, Low Phase Revolver Phase 1 (and 2), Tallahassee FL 1898,\u2019 in addition to a RevolveR etched brass nameplate between the two pickups.\u201d<\/p>\n

The imaginative bass is built from an ash body with a maple top and maple neck. All the hardware is chrome, while vintage tuning machines were used to \u201cfit the aged look of the project.\u201d The pickups are a pair of vintage Peavey Super Ferrites with alternate housings. The bass was stained and finished with multiple coats of tung oil and sealed with a semi-gloss finish.<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of \u2018found\u2019 bits were included in the construction, including the plunger top of an antique brass spray bottle,\u201d Miller notes. \u201cDespite the cutaway, the bass is actually still balanced well. It was an interesting project and I had a lot of fun making it.\u201d<\/p>\n
